Backpack Safety for Kids

Here we go again! As we take off on another exciting school year, let us take a moment to jump into a topic that we as parents should be aware of and that is backpack safety. Dr. Aaron Workman, a chiropractor at one of the highest rated auto injury medical facilities in the Lexington region, provides a careful look at backpack safety from the perspective of a professional as well as a concerned parent.

Just like our bodies need the right care and attention, so do these trusty carriers that go along with students on their educational journeys. Here are some tips to ensure that backpacks are not just functional but also friendly to young spines.

  1. The Perfect Fit: Much like how a puzzle piece fits perfectly, a backpack should match a student’s size. Choose one that has padded, wide straps that distribute weight evenly. This is like wearing shoes that fit just right as it provides comfort and support. I personally loved the gel straps as they were comfortable on the shoulders, and I could wear the backpack longer with less fatigue.
  2. Weight Wisdom: Let us talk about balanced backpacks. This has improved in the digital age but when I was in college you may have had 20lbs of books. A general rule is that the backpack should not weigh more than 10-15% of the student’s body weight.
  3. The Dual Strap Dance: It only takes two musical notes to make harmony and that’s how backpack straps should be used. Wearing both straps not only looks great but also prevents strain on one side of the body. Developing long term bad habits of using only one strap may lead to bad posture. Think of backpack straps as the seatbelts for your books. Keep them snug but not too tight. The goal is to keep the backpack close to your body.
  4. Load Like a Pro: Just as we arrange our plates with various food groups, load your backpack thoughtfully. Heavier items should be closer to your back, ensuring stability and reducing strain. It is like creating a balanced meal for your back!
  5. Stand Tall: Good posture is like a secret weapon for your body. Walk with your head held high, your shoulders back and eyes forward and your back will thank you. A confident stance gives the healthiest chance!
  6. Bend, Don’t Break: Just as we bend down to lift heavy items, bend at your knees when lifting your backpack. It is a smart move that protects your back from unnecessary stress.
  7. Listen to Your Body: Your body will tell you when something is not right. Do not ignore the feeling or the conversation your body is having with you. If you feel discomfort, listen to what it is saying. Do not hesitate to share your concerns with others if you feel something hurts.
  8. Check and Replace: Your backpack is like a trusty sidekick. If it is showing signs of wear and tear, consider retiring it for a new one. Just like we update our electronics, updating your backpack is a smart move. My oldest son has outgrown his previous backpack, so replacement was key for him being a highschooler this year.

These simple tips can make a big difference. Remember, your backpack should be your helper, not a hazard. By applying these pointers, you are not just embracing comfort but you are also taking care of your growing spine.
