Kids and Their Crocs

When it comes to children’s footwear and their foot health, the choice between traditional shoes and Crocs may not even be a choice. If this decision were left solely to my children, the best choice would always be Crocs. Dr. Aaron Workman, a popular member of our Lexington Chambers Medical Group auto injury care team, one of the highest rated medical programs in the area, provides valuable information on kids and their Crocs. There is never an occasion when my children do not think Crocs are appropriate. Even during sporting activities, they would wear Crocs no matter the consequences. Looking at both options, they certainly have their advantages and disadvantages, and what works best for one child may not be best for another. Let us take a look at several advantages and disadvantages of Crocs vs Shoes.

Regular Shoes:

Advantages:

  1. Support and Stability: Many regular shoes are designed to give support to a child’s developing feet. They may come with features like arch support, heel support, and proper cushioning, which can promote good foot health. This can be important in a child’s development of arches.
  1. Protection: Closed-toe shoes offer more protection for a child’s feet, especially in environments where there may be sharp objects, rocks, uneven surfaces, or things that may end up hurting the feet on the ground.
  1. Daily Use: Traditional shoes come in various styles suitable for different activities, from athletic shoes for sports to school shoes for formal occasions.

Disadvantages:

  1. Less Breathable: Some traditional shoes can be less breathable and may start causing discomfort in hot weather or during physical or sports activities.
  1. Less Comfort: Depending on the brand and design, some traditional shoes may not be as comfortable as Crocs, which are known for their cushioned and lightweight construction.

Crocs:

Advantages:

  1. Comfort: Crocs are widely recognized for their comfort. They are lightweight and often made from soft, cushioned materials, which can be gentle on a child’s feet. This may help if they have a blister on their heel from the “Regular Shoes.”
  1. Breathability: All the extra ventilation holes in Crocs promote airflow, helping to keep feet cool and reducing the risk of sweaty feet.
  1. Easy Maintenance: Crocs are easy to clean and quick drying, making them easy for kids who enjoy outdoor play or water activities. They can get in the mud, dirt and not worry about ruining a traditional shoe. They are also fast and easy to put on, which is important to a child that does not want to tie their regular shoes.

Disadvantages:

  1. Limited Support: Crocs generally provide less support and stability than traditional shoes. They lack features like arch support and may not be suitable for children with specific foot conditions.
  1. Exposure: This is the last thing my kids think about so they will end up in crocs during winter months if we do not monitor what they wear. The open-toe design of Crocs leaves children’s toes exposed, which may not be ideal in environments where toe protection is necessary.

For parents it is important to find a balance between comfort, support, and protection when choosing footwear for children. Think about what activities your child will be engaged in while wearing the shoes. For sports, riding bicycles, running or yard chores consider athletic shoes with proper support. For casual wear or beach outings, Crocs can be a comfortable choice. If the shoes do not fit just right, children are not going to wear them. They must be comfortable when walking, running, and doing activities. If the regular shoes make the feet hurt you will lose the battle to Crocs. You can always monitor your child’s foot health and comfort. If you notice any discomfort, redness, or signs of foot problems, consult with a healthcare professional or a pediatric podiatrist.
