Foods to Help Relieve Muscle Cramps

Muscle cramps can strike at the most inconvenient times, leaving you in pain and discomfort. This can happen in the middle of the night while you are asleep or in the middle of a major activity. There have been a few times I have had a foot spasm while driving and even had to pull off the road. I have also had the same foot cramp in the middle of the night and have to get out of bed to stretch it out. Whether you are an athlete or just trying to go about your daily activities, muscle cramps can be a real pain. There are certain foods that can help prevent and relieve muscle cramps. Dr. Aaron Workman, a member of one of the highest rated auto injury medical care facilities in the Lexington area, looks at 8 foods/drinks that can help with muscle cramps.

  1. Bananas

This is one that I feel most people know about. Bananas are a good source of potassium, a mineral that plays a key role in muscle function. Low potassium levels can contribute to muscle cramps, so including potassium-rich foods like bananas in your diet can help maintain proper muscle function.

  1. Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are another excellent source of potassium, and they also provide complex carbohydrates, which can help sustain energy levels during physical activity.

  1. Spinach

Spinach is packed with magnesium, a mineral that supports muscle and nerve function. Magnesium deficiency has been linked to muscle cramps, so incorporating spinach into your meals can be beneficial.

  1. Oranges

Oranges and other citrus fruits are high in vitamin C, which may help reduce the risk of muscle cramps. Vitamin C supports collagen formation, which is important for maintaining muscle health.

  1. Almonds

Almonds are a good source of both magnesium and potassium, making them a valuable addition to your diet if you are prone to muscle cramps.

  1. Watermelon

Staying hydrated is essential for preventing muscle cramps. Watermelon not only provides hydration but also contains l-citrulline, an amino acid that may help reduce muscle soreness and cramps.

  1. Greek Yogurt

Greek yogurt is an excellent source of calcium and protein. Calcium is essential for muscle contraction and relaxation, while protein helps repair and build muscle tissue. Similar foods that also are a good source of calcium can be included in this category.

  1. Pickle Juice

While it may not be a typical food choice for muscle cramp relief, some athletes and researchers have found it effective. The theory behind this remedy is that the acetic acid in pickle juice may trigger a reflex in the nervous system. When pickle juice hits the back of the throat, it sends a signal to the brain, which responds by instructing the muscles to stop cramping. Research published in the journal “Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise” supports this idea. The study found that pickle juice could alleviate muscle cramps faster than drinking water alone. The exact mechanism is still under study, but it can be a great go to since most of us have this in our refrigerators.

Muscle cramps and spasms can really limit your activities if not taken care of. Whether this happens during activities or during the times of rest they are a sign that something is out of balance. The right foods can help you prevent and alleviate them. These dietary choices can support your muscle health and keep cramps at bay.
