What to Do If Your Ride Share Driver Is in an Accident

Riding with a ride share service such as Uber or LYFT has become a popular mode of transportation for people worldwide. While no one expects an accident, they can happen. I have seen several cases of patients in our clinic being treated for an auto accident and subsequently end up in a ride share accident on their way to treatment. Knowing what to do in such a situation can help ensure your safety and rights. Dr. Aaron Workman, a talented chiropractor at one of the highest rated auto injury medical care programs in Kentucky, provides information on what to do if your ride share driver is involved in an accident:

  1. Check Safety First:

The first priority is to ensure your safety and the others involved in the accident. Check yourself and your fellow passengers for any injuries. If possible, move to a safe location away from traffic while having the driver turn their hazard lights on.

  1. Call Emergency Services:

If there are injuries or significant damage to vehicles or property, immediately call emergency services. Provide them with the location of the accident and any important details about injuries or hazards.

  1. Communicate with Your Driver:

Check again on the status of your driver and make sure they are taking the proper steps they need to take. They may be in shock or unsure of what to do, so offering support can be helpful.

  1. Gather Information:

Collect important information about the accident, including the names, contact info, and insurance details of any involved. Take photos of the accident scene, including damage to vehicles, road conditions, and any relevant traffic signs/signals or intersections. Write down or take a video of the accident details ASAP. These details may not be as clear later so capture them while fresh.

  1. Contact Ride Share Support:

Notify them of the accident through the app or by calling their support line. Provide them with details about the accident, including the location, time, and any known injuries sustained. The service will have protocols in place to handle accidents involving their drivers and can provide guidance on following these steps.

  1. Speak with the Authorities on Site:

Cooperate with law enforcement and provide them with accurate information about the accident so they can have a proper report.

  1. Seek Medical Attention:

Even if you do not feel injured immediately after the accident, it is essential to get checked out. Report your injuries to your auto insurance if needed. If paramedics arrive on scene let them look at you. Some injuries, such as whiplash and concussion, may not be immediately apparent but can show up later. Keep a record of any medical treatment you receive.

  1. Document the Incident:

Keep thorough records of the accident, including pictures, videos, witness statements, police reports, medical records, and any correspondence (texts/emails) with the ride share or insurance companies. This documentation can be valuable in the event of a dispute.

  1. Follow Up:

Follow up with the ride share company and your insurance company to ensure that your claim is processed promptly and fairly. Provide them with any additional information or documentation they may request and keep records of all communications.

Being involved in an accident can be a huge emotional and physical stress. When that accident is with a ride share company, it can be even more stressful. If you familiarize yourself with the process, you can likely get through that accident more calmly and efficiently. If you need to have your injuries assessed following this type of accident, we at Chambers Medical Group can help.
