1. Prioritize Sleep
Quality sleep is important for focusing which relies on cognitive function. When you are well rested, your brain can process information more efficiently, and your ability to concentrate improves. Adults typically need 7-9 hours of sleep per night, but the quality of sleep matters just as much as the quantity. There should be a routine every night in preparation of sleep that will allow your body to power down. Avoid electronic screens, caffeine, video games, and eating big meals before bed. If you prioritize sleep, you not only improve focus, but you boost your overall health including your mental well-being.
2. Nourish your Brain
What you eat has an impact on your brain function. Foods rich in omega-3’s support brain health, while leafy greens and berries are packed with antioxidants that protect the brain from stress. Keep a balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to fuel your brain and maintain steady focus throughout the day. Staying hydrated is just as important as the food you eat. Dehydration can lead to fatigue and difficulty concentrating. Do not wait until the end of the day to drink all your water or you will interfere with prioritizing sleep. A full bladder will not give you quality sleep.
3. Eliminate Distractions

You will have to focus on eliminating the distractions from your environment. Your first step should be turning notifications off on your phone, setting up do not disturb (great for nighttime sleep), utilizing some type of noise canceling headset and preparing by having an uncluttered work area. If you are working on a task, set yourself a specific time to work and then allow a short break to refresh.
4. Set Goals
One of the most effective ways to improve focus is to set clear goals that you can achieve. Start small so you can feel success early on and encourage larger goals. When you know exactly what you need to accomplish, it is easier to maintain your attention. Break larger tasks into smaller, manageable steps, and work through them one at a time. I find this important for my kids as giving them one large task is more likely to lead to a focus failure as opposed to giving them the large task broken into small steps. This approach not only makes the work less overwhelming but also provides a sense of progress and motivation as you complete each step. Having the goal written down on a list or calendar is another great way to stay on task.
