Chiropractic is based on the belief that keeping the spinal column in alignment and moving
properly will help the body stay healthy. The spine protects the spinal cord and since the nervous
system, consisting of the brain and nerves, controls all muscles and organs and its functions,
keeping it working properly is very important.

The spinal column consists of 24 individual bones that surrounds and protects the spinal cord. In
the neck, there are 7 bones, in the mid-back there are 12 and in the low back there are 5 bones.
The spinal column is then stabilized by the pelvic bones. Between each bone, nerves extend out
from the spinal cord to the tissues, organs and muscles of the body. If the spinal column is out of
alignment, the nerves and the structures around it can get irritated, causing pain, discomfort, and
disease.

When do people seek chiropractic care? Most people see a chiropractor when they experience
pain or when they experience health problems such as headaches, neck pain, back pain and
muscle ache and stiffness. A chiropractor helps to maintain the alignment and motion of the
spine, therefore keeping your nervous system in good health.

Some people are hesitant to seek chiropractic care because they think the adjustments will hurt.
Some are afraid of the ‘cracking’ or ‘popping’ associated with the adjustments. These are all
valid concerns. Different adjustment methods can help to alleviate those concerns. Manual
adjustments are force applied to the spine by the use of hands. Instrument adjustments use
mechanical force that is faster and can be lighter than manual adjustments. Speaking with your
chiropractor will help determine which type of adjustments will be best for you.
